Dillon Tyler Keyes was a beloved son, brother, family member, and friend whose kindness, creativity, and unmistakable sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Raised in Utica, Dillon had a gift for making people laugh, even in difficult moments. His quick wit, playful sarcasm, and genuine warmth drew people in and made them feel seen and valued.
Dillon had a deep love of learning and curiosity about the world around him. He especially enjoyed reading, often exploring books about different religions, belief systems, and cultures, always seeking to better understand people and their perspectives. He also had a true passion for music, with a particular love for rap, which he connected to both creatively and emotionally. Above all, he was incredibly funny, with a natural ability to bring joy and laughter to those around him.
Dillon lived with schizophrenia, a severe mental illness that profoundly shaped his life. While his journey was often challenging, he faced those challenges with remarkable strength, resilience, and heart. His lived experience gave him deep empathy for others who were struggling, and he remained a compassionate and thoughtful presence to those around him.
Despite the difficulties he faced, Dillon’s humor never left him. He could lighten a room, find joy in small moments, and connect with people in ways that were authentic and real. He was more than his diagnosis; he was creative, funny, loving, intellectually curious, and deeply human.
Dillon passed away on May 3, 2023, at the age of 29. The Dillon Tyler Memorial Scholarship was created to honor his life and legacy by supporting students who are passionate about mental health awareness, advocacy, and care. Through this scholarship, Dillon’s family hopes to encourage future mental health professionals who lead with empathy, perseverance, and the belief that everyone deserves understanding, dignity, and hope.
